In our First Grade Syllabus we suggest that people begin their school year with the creation of a Weather Tree: every day the child checks the weather outside (perhaps when on the daily walk that the First Grade Syllabus recommends) and puts an appropriately colored leaf on his or her tree.

This one was sent to us by Robin in Massachusetts, who writes:

I just wanted to share a picture of our weather tree, as suggested in your First Grade Syllabus. My 7 year old son, and 4 year old daughter, are really enjoying our morning walks, taking note of the day's weather, then coming in to put a new leaf on our tree. We say a verse, which I have written above the tree:

"The Earth is firm beneath my feet
The Sun shines bright above
And here I stand so straight and strong
The whole world to know and love."

 

Ethan in Arizona had great fun with his tree, even if most of the leaves represent either "sunny and hot" or "sunny and warm"!
